French filly Azaelia drops in class for Valley View

Azaelia, a French-based filly now owned by long-time Thoroughbred patrons Peter Brant and Joe Allen, will make her U.S. debut against 13 rivals in Friday's $150,000 Valley View (G3) at Keeneland.

A strong fourth against a tough field in the French Oaks (G1) when last seen in June, Azaelia's rivals include German import Quidura and Grade 3 scorers Tin Type Gal, My Impression, and Cheekaboo.

Remarkable producer of five stakes winners

A mare who can produce even one stakes winner is very valuable for a breeder and represents a small percentage of the mare population. Being able to produce two stakes winners is twice as nice, and rarer still.

But how about a mare who can produce five stakes winners? It’s a remarkable achievement, so it’s fitting that a mare who recently gained such status is named Remarkable Gal. She was credited with her fifth stakes winner on Oct. 10, Canadian Thanksgiving Day, when the juvenile colt Strate Remark won the Ascot Graduation Stakes at Hastings Park.

By Regal Remark out of Home Run Gal, by Struck Out (a son of Nashua), Remarkable Gal was quite unremarkable on the track, but she has produced nine stakes horse from 14 foals of racing age (so many foals out of one mare is also unusual for a broodmare). Remarkable Gal started but three times, all in claiming races at age 3, and won once, a $10,000 maiden-claiming race at Hastings. She was off the board in her other two starts and earned but $4,143.

As a producer, she has been a prize of the Pacific Northwest. Of her nine stakes horses, eight are either stakes winners or stakes-placed in Canada. The only outlier is her second foal, Golden Dragon, by Free At Last, who won a stakes in Macau.

Remarkable Gal’s other four stakes winners all won added-money events at Hastings in British Columbia. Her leading earner is Trick of the North, by Western Trick, a foal of 2001 who won the Grade 3 BC Premier’s Stakes in 2009 and the British Columbia Classic Handicap the following year. He won 16 of 74 starts while racing for 11 seasons and earned $459,592.

Her second-leading earner is Remarkable Miss, by Finality, winner of three stakes at Hastings and an earner of $177,268.

She’s also the dam of two stakes winners by Sungold – Sunnyside Gal, winner of the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity in 2011, and Strate Remark, who has won two stakes in five starts this year at age 2 and earned $77,410.

Sungold is a son of A.P. Indy who raced in the Pacific Northwest and won three of 11 starts while racing from ages 2 through 4 and earning $42,673. He ran in stakes twice, including the Ascot Graduation, but failed to hit the board in either event. He stands at R.J. and Lois Bennett’s Flying Horse Farm in British Columbia for a private fee. The Bennetts, stalwarts of the BC breeding industry for years, had bought Sungold as a yearling for $30,000 at the Keeneland September sale and raced him.

#FTSarFall: Final numbers show marginal declines

The 2016 renewal of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale showed a marginal year-to-year regression in gross and average, and was topped by the $150,000 broodmare Coronation Street.

Monday’s sale saw 164 horses sold for revenues of $2,780,600, down 2 percent from last year’s sale when 162 horses brought $2,833,800.

The average sale price declined 3 percent to $16,955 from $17,493, while the median fell 15 percent to $8,500 from $10,000. The buyback rate closed at 37 percent, down from 46 percent during last year’s sale.

At the top of the market, four horses changed hands for six figures, showing no change from last year’s sale. Horses sold for $50,000 or more rose to 15 from 12.

The sale was topped by Coronation Street, an unraced 3-year-old Street Cry mare who sold in foal to Alpha to Chester Broman for $150,000.

#FTSarFall: $125k Into Mischief filly tops weanling portion

The weanling portion of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale was led by an Into Mischief filly, who sold to trainer Linda Rice, as agent for Sheila Rosenblum's Lady Sheila Stable for $125,000. It was the auction's second-highest price overall.

The gray or roan filly is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-placed Value Plus mare Roses Plus, from the family of Panamanian champion Percentile and Grade 2 winner Rockwall.

The filly was bred in New York by Clyde Taylor, and was consigned as agent by Catalyst Bloodstock.

#FTSarFall: High buyback rate in yearling portion

The yearling portion of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale went by without much fanfare, spurred by a 68 percent buyback rate.

Nine yearlings changed hands in the auction ring for $47,200, posting an average price of $5,244 and a median of $3,000.

The yearlings were led by a first-crop Emcee filly who sold to Gloria Martin for $16,000, making her the only yearling of the auction to sell for a five-figure price.

The gray or roan filly is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Lightnin N Thunder mare Annie Roe, from the family of stakes winners Sweet Molly Malone, Woman in Space, Humor Me Molly, and Reno Rebel. She was bred in New York by Elena Ahlschwede, and was consigned by The New Hill Farm, agent.

’16 MIDSHIPMAN – IRISH CONNECTION FILLY (Hip 164): Weanling daughter of Champion MIDSHIPMAN is a three parts sister to multiple graded stakes winner IRISH JASPER. IRISH JASPER most recently won the G2 Thoroughbred Club of America S. at Keeneland, a “Win and You’re In" for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She will be consigned by St. George Sales, agent.

These entries may now be viewed online. Print versions of all supplemental entries will be available on the Fasig-Tipton grounds at sale time.

Fasig-Tipton will continue to accept approved November Sale entries up until the Breeders’ Cup.

Broman purchased both of the six-figure mares sold at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall sale

Through the first one-third of the catalog of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall Sale currently under way, there have been two mares that have sold for six figures, both purchsed by Chester Broman.

The sale topper is Coronation Street, by Street Cry out of Sara Louise, by Malibu Moon, who sold for $150,000 in foal to Alpha. Consigned by Sequel New York, agent, Coronation Street was unraced. Her dam, Sara Louise, won the Grade 2 Top Flight and has produced two other foals, including $116,000-plus earner Mrs. Hudson.

Broman also purchased the other six-figure mare, going to $100,000 for Fingers Crossed, also in foal to Alpha and consigned by Sequel New York. Fingers Crossed won $103,630 and she is in foal for the first time. Her dam, Ruth E, by A.P. Indy, is the dam of Ruthless Quality, by Elusive Quality, winner of both her starts this year as a 2-year-old, including the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Stakes.

#FTSarFall: Coronation Street leads broodmares at $150k

The broodmare/broodmare prospect portion of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale is in the books, led by Coronation Street, who sold to Chester Broman for $150,000.

Coronation Street, an unraced 3-year-old Street Cry mare, sold in foal to Alpha and is the second foal out of the Grade 2-winning Malibu Moon mare Sara Louise. She is a sibling to two winners from two runners out of the mare.

Bred in Kentucky by Sheikh Mohammed Al-Maktoum's Darley operation, which also owns Alpha and stands him at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson, N.Y., Coronation Street is from the family of Mexican classic winner Jacobino, and Grade 3 winners Til Forbid, Hold Old Blue, Scoop and Just Louise. Sequel New York consigned Coronation Street, as agent.

At the end of the broodmare portion, a total of 64 horses had sold for revenues of $912,900. The average sale price was $14,246 and the median was $5,500. The buyback rate finished at 30 percent.

Those numbers all tracked behind last year's final numbers, but the strength of this sale is in its weanling offerings, which wraps up the sale after the slate of yearlings.

Ohio horsewoman Klosterman dies at 78

Judy Klosterman, an Ohio-based owner, breeder, and consignor, died Oct. 13 from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. She was 78.

Klosterman and husband Ken established the 235-acre Langsem Farm in Loveland, Ohio. Their successes under the Langsem banner include Naughty, Ohio’s champion 2-year-old of 1999, Ohio Broodmare of the Year Haveaheavenlytime, and stakes winners Cruise, Brushy Fork, Enticed, Heavenliness, and Conjuress. Klosterman was named Ohio’s breeder of the Year in 1992, and TOBA’s Midwest regional Breeder of the Year in 1999.

They also bred and sold Unbridled Time, a son of Unbridled’s Song out of Haveaheavenlytime who was purchased for an Ohio-bred record $1.15 million at the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale and developed into a stakes winner.

Valiant City ready for more October success

STICKNEY, Ill. – Valiant City won a dirt-route allowance race at Hawthorne Racecourse last October that he used as a springboard to the Hawthorne Gold Cup. There is no Gold Cup this year – the entire Hawthorne stakes schedule was dropped due to financial issues – but Valiant City is ready to reprise his October success of one year ago.

Meadowlands: Thursday racing on the horizon for 2017

Meadowlands: Thursday racing on the horizon for 2017 10/18/2016 8:48AM

Meadowlands: Thursday racing on the horizon for 2017 The Meadowlands has applied to the New Jersey Racing Commission requesting 91 racing dates for the 2017 live racing season. Those dates include racing seven consecutive Thursday cards from January 26 through March 9. The Meadowlands will also race four Thursday cards from December 8 through December 29 in 2016. Hopefully there will be enough horses available to fill three days of racing. This decision was made in response to a request by the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey (SBOA of NJ) requesting more live dates during that time period. Another important decision made in view of the robust market for yearlings at the recently concluded Lexington Selected Yearling Sale is to maintain as many of the Grand Circuit stakes at as close to current purse levels as possible, despite the burden of a purse account that is currently overpaid by $5 million. For the record, the total amount in purses for all stakes at The Meadowlands in 2016 will be $17.7 million with nearly $6 million of that coming from the stakes percentage of the purse account. The reality of sustaining a stakes program anywhere close to what we are accustomed to at The Meadowlands will require industry support via sponsorship of these races. We hope to be able to find sponsors for all of our stakes and Jason Hall will be reaching out to the major owners, breeders, vendors and other participants to hopefully raise enough in sponsorships to keep the majority of stakes programs in place. --press release (Meadowlands)

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge 2016 'Win & You’re In' Series has concluded and the Juvenile division is well represented by its four winners.

The series concluded across all divisions last weekend, but the juveniles really stood out. At Keeneland, we witnessed a powerful statement by the winner of the Breeders’ Futurity. In the Champagne Stakes at Belmont, the horse that broke the worst was anything but done. In a thrilling stretch duel photo finish, the favorite was unable to hang on and finished second by the slimmest of margins.

And the four big winners are:

Not This Time (Iroquois Stakes)

Gormley (FrontRunner Stakes)

Classic Empire (Breeders’ Futurity)

Practical Joke (Champagne Stakes)

Compliments of the Breeders’ Cup and the Challenge Series, the entry fee for the Juvenile has been paid so anticipate all four of these young talents to remain listed as probable. In fact, consider all of them as potential winners because their last race was terrific.

But, that’s only four spots in a 14 horse field. So, which 10 horses should we expect to see join them in the starting gate for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on November 5.

A quick reminder, seven juveniles earn an entry through the Challenge Series and graded stakes points. However, the remaining the seven spots are decided by the panel of experts to ensure the talent in the field is as strong as it can be. Without further ado here is the list of official point earners through last weekend minus the the big four.

Points Horse  Trainer
22 Klimt Bob Baffert
10 Straight Fire Keith Desormeaux
8 Lookin At Lee Steve Asmussen
6 Gunnevera Antonio Sano
6 Royal Copy D. Wayne Lukas
6 Syndergaard Todd Pletcher
5 Tip Tap Tapizar Steve Asmussen
4 Big League Peter Miller
4 Bitumen Eddie Kenneally
4 Favorable Outcome Chad Brown
4 Golden Hawk Mark Casse
4 Midnight Pleasure Shelbe Ruis
4 Pretty Boy Flash Steve Asmussen
4 Wild Shot George Arnold
3 Recruiting Ready Horacio DePaz
2 Han Sense Mike Maker
2 Random Walk Richard Violette
2 Romeo O Romeo Brian Williamson
2 Sonic Mule Todd Pletcher
2 Thirstforlife Mark Casse
1 King and His Court Alexander Patykewich
1 Star Empire  Wesley Ward
1 Zartera Steve Asmussen

Here is what we know: Klimt, Straight Fire and Lookin at Lee have also qualified and will start should their connections choose to move forward. Outside of that, everything else can be considered my best guess. To begin let’s focus on the juveniles that are locks to be selected by the panel.

Points are awarded based on performances in graded stakes races. To earn those points a horse must finish in the top three. Though some of the juveniles that will make the field will have at least some points, we start with a horse that has zero.

Bred in Florida and undefeated in the Sunshine State, Three Rules has caught the attention of many racing fans. None of those five wins at Gulfstream Park were graded stakes races but all of them were dominant. This is a key example of why the experts have the leverage to trump the points rankings and use one of their seven selections to usher in a horse that has a superior resume and should be considered a top 14 contender.

All signs point to that becoming a reality, so you can expect to see the son of Gone Astray – Joy Rules to be one of the fourteen starters. It will be the first race of his career outside of Gulfstream Park but we should expect the Floridian, trained by Jose Pinchin, to be ready.

Anyone can argue that the horse that lost by a nose in the Champagne Stakes deserves to qualify as much as the winner does. Anyone includes me, so Syndergaard will be a starter in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Prior to the near miss in the Champagne this New York-bred and Todd Pletcher trained colt saw the winner's circle twice in two career races. The latter of the two was the top spot in the Funny Cide at Saratoga. Pletcher earned his second and most recent Juvenile win at Santa Anita Park with Shanghai Bobby in 2012. Though this horse has not earned the respect and same odds as his last champion, Syndergaard should still be considered a legitimate play on a number of different tickets.

Gunnevera, the son of Dialed In, has a few things going for him. Number one is that he took home a win in the grade 2 Saratoga Special. It earned him six points which leaves him outside of the top 7 but he cannot be ignored. Secondly, if you like Three Rules you should respect Gunnevera enough to give him another shot. In his career debut, the Antonio Sano trainee finished runner up to Three Rules in their first maiden race. Next time out Gunnevera was not as close but good enough to use both races to his advantage. He would win his next two starts.

Fifth place may have been a big disappointment in the Breeders’ Futurity. Secondly, his ability to win at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile distance may be a valid concern, but I believe Gunnevera has done enough to secure one of the seven invitations.

In case you’re not counting, that’s ten quality juveniles. Barring any defections due to choice or injury I’ve given you seven qualifiers and three locks that will be selected. Now onto the final four spots. Be prepared as I’m going to give you my answers without as much confidence but enough to consider them as good guesses.

The Breeders’ Cup is a global racing event. A few Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners that began their racing career in Europe are Vale of York ’09, Wilko ’04 and Johannesburg ’01. Might some U.S. juveniles get snubbed by the panel because the Breeders’ Cup is pushing for a global presence in every race? Maybe, but I do not see that as a big issue. Additionally, in 2016, we’re talking about two winners of pretty good Juvenile prep races outside of the U.S. Therefore, Syphax, winner of the Acomb Stakes at York, and Golden Hawk, winner of the Grey Stakes at Woodbine, seem to have a good shot at being chosen by the panel.

That leaves two more spots. A safe bet is Tip Tap Tapizar who has never finished outside of the top three in four lifetime starts. Three of those were stakes races. Two of them were graded stakes races that earned the Steve Asmussen trainee 5 points. Last but not least, I have already praised the winner of both graded stakes; Classic Empire in the Bashford Manor–G3 and Gunnevera in the Saratoga Special-G2.

He will need the support of the panel but I believe the son of Tapizar, 2012 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile champion, already has it. Look for the Winchell Thoroughbreds silks to be present in the field of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

The last spot could go a number of different ways. If I was basing my guess on points alone Royal Copy, runner up to Practical Joke in the Hopeful, would be it. If I was leaning towards another graded stakes winner Bitumen would grab the final spot. But, Royal Copy only has one graded stakes start and Bitumen hasn’t done much more since his win in the six furlong Sanford–G3 at Saratoga.

Instead, I’ll defer to a general assumption; 14 horses will not start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Last year we did see a full field at Keeneland. Prior to that, it has been very rare that as many as fourteen loaded into the starting gate of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. In fact, I would argue there’s a better chance of less than thirteen versus fourteen.

Although the story of a Kentucky Derby winner is legendary, a champions trail is what The Kentucky Derby Post is all about. The coverage begins when Juvenile season starts and continues until the field is set, the picks are in and the roses are earned.
