When Baccari Bloodstock was showing aTapit colt to potential buyers before the Keeneland September yearling sale, representatives from two prominent farms inspected the horse but never returned for another look.
In the end, there were enough buyers for the colt that at least two bidders hooked up to push the yearling to top the Sept. 13 session at $1.2 million, pleasing consignor Chris Baccari and partner SF Bloodstock, which bred the colt.
The colt is out Hooh Why, who won the 2009 Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland and 2010 Seaway (Can-III) at Woodbine among seven stakes wins. The daughter of Cloud Hopping, was a $750,000 RNA at the 2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale while carrying the Tapit colt in utero.
"He just had a beautiful body. He had a big walk, and I fell in love with him," buyer J. J. Crupi said of the colt. "We weren't leaving here without him. It's going to the racetrack, it's not going to the sale, it's going to become a racehorse. He'll be broken at Crupi's New Castle Farm and then move on probably to Todd Pletcher."
Chris Baccari said the criteria some potential buyers use in their pre-sale inspections, especially the emphasis on the obligatory walk, is too discerning.
"That's disheartening," said Baccari, who had sold 10 yearlings for $3,550,000 through the Sept. 18 sale session. "They are on special-type horses and they make such a big deal about certain things, especially a walk or something like that. I try to tell them they don’t have races for walking. And dirt horses do not walk like grass horses."
Baccari said colleagues in the horse business assured him the colt in his consignment was the best of the Tapits being offered at Keeneland; the consignor did not have an opportunity to look at other yearlings by North America's leading sire because he was tied up with his own horses.
"They just felt that he had a little bit more natural longness to him, a little more bone, just a little more rugged look to him and his mother (Hooh Why) was a great racehorse," Baccari said.
The veteran horseman said Hooh Why was a hard-knocking mare with a race record he and other breeders find desirable in broodmares. In six seasons, Hooh Why raced 54 times, with 12 wins, 14 second-place finishes, and nine thirds while earning more than $1.2 million.
"She had a lot of soundness to her and I think that's appealing to anybody," he said of the mare. "Nobody likes to be able to run four times and be done."
Baccari honed his eye for a horse by buying yearlings to race and came to the equine sales market almost by accident.

Sarah Sis led the field all the way and held off a strong closing bid from two-time defending winner Living The Life to narrowly prevail in the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters(gr. II) Sept. 19.Watch Replay
Living The Life, off the pace early, burst from the pack in the final sixteenth and steadily closed in on Sarah Sis, coming tantalizingly close to a third straight win, but she was denied by just a head.
Trained by Ingrid Mason for owner Joe Ragsdale, Sarah Sis added a fifth graded win to her record and second victory from eight starts this year after taking the Chicago Handicap (gr. III) July 27 at Arlington International Racecourse three starts back. The 4-year-old Sharp Humor filly entered off a ninth-place finish against top-flight company at Saratoga Race Course in the Ballerina Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27 but rebounded emphatically Monday evening when Florent Geroux fired her from the gate.
"She broke very sharply; the first quarter was slow but she pricked her ears," Geroux said of Sarah Sis, who at 10-1 odds went on to finish 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.42 on the all-weather track.
With Unbridled Courage pressing about a head back, Disco Barbie and Birdatthewireclose up, and Living The Life midpack in sixth, Sarah Sis clocked the opening quarter in :23.89 and a quicker half mile in :46.66. Entering the lane, she had a narrow advantage over Birdatthewire while Living The Life split rivals four wide with Corey Lanerie and took aim on the front-runner.
Opening up by two lengths, Sarah Sis had to call upon all her reserves as Living the Life closed in but just missed.
Birdatthewire, the favorite, tired in upper stretch before finishing eighth, while Bar of Gold got up for third, a half length behind Living The Life.
Sarah Sis paid $22.20, $10, and $7, Living The Life returned $5.40 and $3.60, and Bar of Gold paid $6.20 to show.
Sarah Sis was bred in Kentucky by veterinarian Catherine Rene White from the winning Gilded Time mare Emerald Gal, whose dam is a half sister to graded winner and millionaire Isitingood. Ragsdale bought the filly from Doble Jack, agent, for $20,000 at the 2014 Ocala Breeders' Sale Co. June sale of 2-year-olds in training and she has since earned $911,000.
Offered though agent Lane's End at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale, she did not reach her reserve price on a final bid of $1.2 million.
Sarah Sis has an 8-4-0 record from 21 career starts that includes three other graded wins, all in 2015: the Lexus Raven Run (gr. II), Iowa Oaks (gr. III), and Honeybee Stakes (gr. III).

Unbeaten Songbird arrives Sept. 19 at Parx Racing for Sept. 24 Cotillion (gr. I) Taylor Ejdys/EQUI-PHOTOSongbird Tops Cotillion, PA Derby Draws 12
by Blood-Horse Staff
The stage was set for the biggest day of the year at Parx Racing when entries were taken and post positions drawn Sept. 19 for theCotillion Stakes (gr. I) and Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II), which anchor a five stakes program Sept. 24.
Songbird was a near-unanimous choice as champion 2-year-old filly in 2015, and the flashy filly will be favored to remain unbeaten against five rivals—three of them grade I or grade II winners—in the $1 million Cotillion.
The Pennsylvania Derby looms a pivotal showdown between Nyquist and Exaggerator, the first two finishers in both the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (both gr. I). Exaggerator has since gone on to win the Preakness Stakes and Haskell Invitational (both gr. I).
If both colts start, the purse of the Pennsylvania Derby increases by $250,000 to $1.25 million.
Unbeaten Songbird has continued to dominate her division with six more graded stakes wins this year, capped by smashing scores in the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes (both gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course that made her a perfect 10 for 10 for Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
Songbird, who had her final workout at Santa Anita Park on Sunday, was scheduled to arrive on the grounds at Parx at approximately 6:00 p.m. EDT Sept. 19. Set to oppose the prohibitive 1-2 morning-line favorite are the first two finishers from the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I): Cathryn Sophia and Land Over Sea, and Acorn (gr. I) winner Carina Mia; and local runners Disco Rose and Queena Esther.
The 50th running of the Cotillion will be race 10, with post time scheduled for 4:55.
Nyquist won his first eight starts, taking the measure of Exaggerator three times along the way, but the latter turned the tables on that rival in the Preakness and Haskell. After respectively putting in their final workouts over the weekend at San Luis Rey Downstraining center and Churchill Downs, they were scheduled to ship to Parx Wednesday.
Nyquist, the 5-2 favorite, and Exaggerator, the 9-2 second choice, have combined to win 12 graded stakes and $8.75 million.
The Pennsylvania Derby attracted a full field of 12—the largest field since a dozen also ran in 2008—including three-time grade II winnerCupid; multiple graded stakes winner Gun Runner; and Awesome Slew, a dominating winner of the grade III Smarty Jones Sept. 5 at Parx.
The 40th Pennsylvania Derby will be race 11, with post time set for 5:45.
The owner and trainer of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, Haskell and Travers winners are eligible for a $50,000 appearance bonus. Therefore, the connections of Nyquist would receive a total of $100,000, while Exaggerator's connections would receive $200,000 if they start.
Saturday's card also includes the $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-old sprinters, the $150,000 Pennsylvania Derby Champion Stakes, honoring last year's Pa. Derby winner Frosted; and the $100,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap for state-bred turf runners.
Gates open at 10:00 Saturday morning, and first post is 12:25.

Bernardini Colt Tops Solid Keeneland Session
Hip 1928, a son of Bernardini from the female family of Frosted, topped the session Sept. 19 Keeneland PhotosBernardini Colt Tops Solid Keeneland Session
by Ron Mitchell
A Bernardini colt from the family of top handicap horse Frosted was purchased by Ben Glass on behalf of Gary and Mary West for $600,000 to top the Sept. 19 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale in which the numbers dipped slightly.
The session had a slight dip in momentum seen the previous six days of the auction as 286 horses were sold for $20,935,500. The session average of $73,201 represented a 6% decline from the $77,906 figure a year ago when a Curlin filly was sold for a Book 3 record price of $975,000. The median rose 4.6% to $57,500 from $55,000 and the RNA rate was 21.9% compared with 26% a year ago.
The sale continues through Sept. 25, trending ahead of last year with 1,367 head averaging $170,947 from gross receipts of $233,264,500, which is a 4.7% increase from the $163,278 average in 2015. The median of $100,000 is down 4.8% and the cumulative RNA rate is 28.8%.
"Overall today was a good, solid Book 3," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales operations, adding that the strength at the top of the market continued on from last week's strong Book 1. "They have found a comfort level and are very happy in that comfort level. It really has continued on and they are happy to spend the money. The competition was good."
With the sale transitioning into Book 4 for the Sept. 20 session, Russell said there are still a lot of buyers who haven't filled their orders so they should remain active, along with the usual group of new buyers who show up during the second week of the auction.
The Bernardini colt, consigned as Hip 1928 by Taylor Made Sales Agency on behalf of Godolphin, was produced from the winning Unbridled’s Song mare With Sugar On Top, a half sister to Frosted, the son of Tapit who won his third grade I in the Whitney Stakes atSaratoga Race Course. Fast Cookie, the dam of Frosted and With Sugar On Top, is a multiple grade II-winning daughter of Deputy Minister bred and raced by Bob McNair's Stonerside Farm.
Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin purchased the 2,000-acre Stonerside Farm and nearly all of its bloodstock holdings in September 2008.
"He was an athletic horse who had a great walk on him," said Glass. "He looked like he would be an early horse; the kind of horse the Glasses like. He stood out so we had to step it up (in price). We got lucky."
Mark Taylor said the colt was in Book 3 of the Keeneland sale rather than placed with the better prospects of Book 1 because when he was inspected by Taylor Made's representatives in early spring "he had a good walk but he was a little on the small side."
Then, when it came time to do the catalog placement for Books 2 and 3, the colt ended up on the second day of Book 3. "We had other Bernardini foals for Book 2 so we just bumped him back.
"He really blossomed during the summer and he was a quality horse. All the big players found him. He was the obvious standout today but I think he would have brought about that whether no matter which book he was in. He just had charisma about him."
Consignor Kerry Cauthen of Four Star Sales said the consignment "had a great sale" Sept. 19, selling 26 of 29 offered on the day for receipts of $1,607,000.
"There are a lot of people who still need horses," Cauthen said as he and his staff kept pace with the busy activity at the barn. "There was a lot of steam at the end of Book 2 and it keeps on going. We had a nice group of horses and there are buyers here for them if you keep your reserves honest and let the market decide what they're worth.
"You have a lot of end-users buying to take them to the track, and that's what you want to see in a healthy market. It's not being buoyed by investment money."
