You’re missing out on your experiences. A meditation expert explains how to live in the moment
By Brigid Schulte

Sometimes in the crazy swirl of life, it feels like there’s no time to stop. But that’s just what Sharon Salzberg teaches people to do. Salzberg is a New York Times best selling author, a teacher of meditation and mindfulness and one of the co-founders of the Insight Meditation Society at Barre, Massachusetts. She explains how best to practice mindfulness here:

Q: OK, mindfulness seems to be all the rage right now, but why do it? Why meditate? Why be mindful? What does that do for us?

Salzberg: Mindfulness has a lot of benefits. One is simply connecting with our lives as we live them. If you drink your coffee while reading your paper, and checking your emails, with the TV on, that can lead to you feeling perpetually disconnected and unfulfilled. You may think, you need to get different coffee, or grind it differently, and that would make you feel more satisfied, instead of realizing, ‘Maybe the first step is really actually inhabiting our life and really connecting to it every once in awhile.’ Sometimes, just drink the cup of coffee and experience it fully.

Mindfulness is simply the perception of what’s fully happening in the moment not distorted by bias, playing old stories, usually that have something to do with regret, over and over and over, or anticipating future events that most likely will never happen.

Mindfulness helps relieve anxiety and can give us a real sense of connection and fulfillment, as well as insight and understanding. The idea is, by developing a different relationship with our experience, we get to see it differently. If an emotion comes up, and we start fighting it, there’s not a lot of learning going on. If we fall into it and become overwhelmed, there’s not a lot of learning going on. Mindfulness helps us develop a different, kinder relationship with ourselves, to see much more deeply into all of our experience.

Q: How does practicing mindfulness change people?

Look at how you speak to yourself when you make a mistake. Do you pile on endlessly, or do you have more resilience? When you talk to a stranger, are you just lost in all the emails you need to write, or can you actually listen more? Do you sometimes just drink that cup of coffee and feel fulfillment in the smaller things that come your way? Can you be less swayed by others’ impressions of somebody, and be more determined to see things for yourself? And figure things out, and how you feel about them, or whether you want to pursue them?

You’re just much more aware of when you’re there and when you’re not there, and how to bring yourself back to paying attention.

One guy came up to me and said, ‘I was going to stop meditating because I thought I wasn’t changing or benefiting from it. Then my kids told me, Please don’t stop. You’re not so angry, you really listen.’ Sometimes other people see changes in us before we see it in ourselves.

Q: Many people say they’ve tried and failed at meditating or being mindful. Studies have found some people would rather give themselves an electric shock than be alone with their thoughts. Why is hard to be where we are?

Salzberg: It’s actually not hard to do for a moment. It’s hard for more than a moment or two. That’s the work. But it’s not such an awesome skill that it’s unimaginable. It’s right here. The whole practice is – Don’t worry where your mind wandered. It’s coming back that’s most important.

People say they feel like failures. But you can’t fail. When we realize our mind has wandered off like a monkey, it’s in that moment we have a chance to be really different, instead of reinforcing old habits. Instead of lambasting ourselves that we didn’t meditate perfectly, we let go and start over. And if your mind wanders in the next ten seconds, you let go and start over. And let go and start over. That’s strength training. We’re practicing resilience.

Mindfulness is not about what’s happening. It’s how you relate to what’s happening. If you sit and think, ‘I’m sleepy. I’m restless. I’m angry. I’m bored. My knee hurts. Then something itched.’ That could be an excellent meditation, depending on how you were with each of those experiences. Or it could be a terrible meditation if you fall into old habits, if anger rises and you think, ‘I’m going to be angry the rest of my life.’ Or sadness arises and you think, ‘I spent $10,000 in therapy just last year, I shouldn’t feel this way anymore.’ We pile on judgment on what’s already a painful or uncomfortable feeling. That’s the ordinary habit of mind. We’re just so unfair to ourselves.

Q: Why is that our ordinary habit of mind, to always go to the negative?

Salzberg: Evolutionary psychologists tell me we have a negativity bias. We are always looking out for the threat in the jungle, the animal about to leap on us and eat us, even if that’s not at all realistic to our current state. It takes training to also look on the other side of things.

Q: When people are just starting out, what do you recommend they do?

Salzberg: The most important thing, as far as I can tell, is consistency. It’s much better to have a smaller, realistic commitment that you will actually fulfill, than thinking, ‘I’m going to sit and meditate for eight hours on Saturday.’ Usually, when someone’s starting out, I’ll say, try 10 minutes a day. I saw research that found meditating for 10 minutes a day for two months establishes new brain patterns. I have friends who suggest five minutes a day, but I respond by saying the first five minutes are the hardest. That’s when you think, ‘I’ve got to call this person, I forgot to call that person, what’s that sound?’ If you sit through that, there’s a big discharge of stress, which is a good thing. But after those five minutes, you have a chance to go deeper. Common sense says 10 to 20 minutes a day, if you can do it. But I think it’s the everydayness that is going to prove to be more important.

What you’re looking for, over time, is to measure what is changing in your life, not what happens in the 10 or 20 minute session. That may not feel so glorious. But you’ll find over time that you’re different in life, and that’s what counts. That’s why we practice – to have a better life.

Achnaha drops from stakes

Achnaha drops from stakes

Achnaha will return to allowance company after three straight stakes losses.

ELMONT, N.Y. – After 10 of 15 scheduled turf races were transferred to the dirt during the last three cards, weather conditions are favorable for a return to turf racing Wednesday at Belmont Park, where six of the nine races are scheduled for the turf.

That includes a solid second-level allowance feature at 1 1/4 miles that some trainers are hoping to use as a stepping-stone to the Long Island Stakes on Nov. 6 at Aqueduct. Achnaha, Bishop’s Pond, and Gotachancetodance head Wednesday’s contentious nine-horse field.

Achnaha, trained by George Weaver, is dropping into allowance company after competing in three consecutive stakes. Three starts back, she finished second to Suffused in the Belmont Coronation going 1 15/16 miles at Belmont. In a pair of Grade 3 stakes at Saratoga, Achnaha finished third in the Waya to Guapaza and fifth to Suffused again in the Glens Falls.

“I thought she ran her race in both races,” Weaver said of the Saratoga races. “I thought she might have been training better going into the Waya than the next one.”

Weaver’s biggest concern Wednesday is the seeming lack of pace in this field.

“Achnaha likes to run these distances, but she’s a closer, and sometimes we’re at the mercy of the pace,” Weaver said. “I should probably sign up for a rabbit.”

Bishop’s Pond and Gotachancetodance both have run well at Belmont Park and are coming out of fifth-place finishes at this condition in separate allowance races at Saratoga.

Daring Duchess is winless in three tries at Belmont, but she does loom as the potential speed of the field under John Velazquez.

Starting Wednesday, first post for most of the remaining 20 days of the meet is 12:55 p.m. Eastern.

Key Contenders

Achnaha, by Haatef

Last 3 Beyers: 92-93-86

◗ The last time she raced in allowance company, she cleared her first-level condition by 1 3/4 lengths going 1 3/8 miles at Belmont. She has participated in three consecutive stakes since.

Gotachancetodance, by English Channel

Last 3 Beyers: 86-85-97

◗ She is 2 for 3 at Belmont Park, including a two-length victory in a first-level allowance going 10 furlongs last Oct. 6 in which she beat, among others, Achnaha.

◗ She came off a nine-month layoff to run fifth at this condition, but that race was at 1 1/16 miles.

“I thought it was what I would expect her to do at that distance,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “She ran out of ground. She’s a filly that seems like she appreciates longer. This is a more favorable distance for her, but glancing over the [past performances], it came up a pretty salty two-other-than.”

Bishop’s Pond, by Curlin

Last 3 Beyers: 83-89-37

◗ Had to steady twice in the stretch when bottled up on the inside at this condition at Saratoga.

◗ Suffered a tough loss when beaten a nose here going 1 3/8 miles in July, outfinished by the late-running European import Desiree Cleary.

“That was a tough beat; she deserved to get the win,” trainer Jason Servis said. “She’s a nice filly. Hopefully, she repeats these numbers.”

Stevens has mount on Runhappy in Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Gary Stevens has the mount on Runhappy in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, trainer Laura Wohlers said on Monday.

Runhappy, the champion sprinter of 2015, was paired with Stevens back in December, when the horse captured the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita.

Runhappy last raced Saturday, and finished fourth in the Grade 3 Ack Ack at Churchill Downs. Edgar Prado was aboard the horse, who was making his first start back since the Malibu.

Wohlers said Runhappy emerged from the race in good condition and plans remain to ship out to Santa Anita about seven to 10 days in advance of the Breeders' Cup. Runhappy, who is based in Lexington, Ky., races for Jim McIngvale.

  • Frosted remains under consideration for BC Classic, Dirt Mile

Frosted, who has earned berths into both the Breeders' Cup Classic and the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, remains under consideration for both races, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said on Monday.

"No decisions have been made," he said. "He's pointing for that weekend. He's doing great, working weekly, pointing for the Breeders' Cup."

McLaughlin said a decision on the path the horse will take will come down from Godolphin Racing.

Frosted earned a Dirt Mile berth for his win in the Metropolitan Handicap. He locked up a berth into the Classic by virtue of his win in the Whitney.

The $1 million Dirt Mile will be run Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, and the $6 million Classic at the Southern California track the following day, on Nov. 5.

Frosted is based in New York.

  • Morales headed to hospital for observation

Jockey Silvino Morales is being taken to a local hospital for observation after going down in a spill in the last race. The horse he was riding, Ziggymiester, clipped heels approaching the quarter-pole and flipped.

Officials said Morales was conscious and was able to move his arms and legs.

The incident happened when Tulipia, who was making a strong move, cut in front of Ziggymiester. Tulipia, ridden by Robert Stewart, was disqualified and placed last.

Ziggymiester got up but was vanned off

  • Sunday Woodbine recap

With leading rider Eurico Da Silva out of town, 10 different riders scored on the card, including David Moran, who won the $125K Vice Regent Stakes on Thor's Rocket, a sprinter stretching out who endured a four-wide trip. The personable Irishman revealed after the race that his wife is carrying their eighth child. She will be their fourth girl, to go along with four boys.

The favored Aye Aye Captain seemed to suffer the most from the Vice Regent being moved from the grass to a mile and a sixteenth on the Tapeta following an early afternoon shower. After a stalking trip, he made the lead in the stretch before flattening out to finish sixth. His previous effort was a solid second in a one-mile optional claimer around one turn on the lawn.

Ontario-breds Woodbridge and Escondera ran one-two in a mile and a sixteenth maiden special for 2yos. Both of them are prospects for next year's Queen's Plate.

Light My Path ended a bout of seconditis by beating $10K NW2 opposition under Alan Garcia as the 3-1 second choice in the nightcap. Her victory ensured a Jackpot Hi 5 carryover, which is a whopping $343K heading into Wednesday night.

  • Dalmore under consideration for Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Dalmore under consideration for Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Dalmore, the winner of the Grade 3 Affirmed at Santa Anita, is being considered for a start in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, trainer Keith Desormeaux said. The Grade 1, $1 million race will be run Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Dalmore, who is based at the Southern California track, is coming off a runner-up finish in the Grade 3, $400,000 Super Derby on Sept. 10 at Louisiana Downs. He was edged by a half-length by Texas Chrome, who returned in his next start to capture the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

Texas Chrome also is a candidate for the BC Dirt Mile.

Desormeaux said Dalmore had a nice breeze Saturday. If the horse goes in the BC Dirt Mile, he will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux.

Dalmore has a strong record over the Santa Anita main track. He is 3-for-6 on the surface and popped his best Beyer Speed Figure, a 102, in the Affirmed after covering a mile and a sixteenth in a quick 1:40.80.

Dalmore races for Big Chief Racing, Rocker O Ranch, and Desormeaux.

Desormeaux is in the midst of a career year, having won the Preakness with Exaggerator.

Santa Anita: Postponed "unlikely" for Breeders' Cup Turf

Santa Anita: Postponed "unlikely" for Breeders' Cup Turf

Postponed, the beaten favorite in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly Racecourse in France, is doubtful to start in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 5, trainer Roger Varian said on Tuesday.

In a brief telephone conversation, Varian said Postponed has run for the final time this year. In the Arc, Postponed finished fifth, 6 1-2 lengths behind Found, as the 15-8 favorite.

"I think it's unlikely now," Varian said when asked if Postponed would still be sent to California. Varian said the focus would be on preparing Postponed for the 2017 season.

Postponed was beaten for the first time this year in the Arc. He won twice in Dubai in March - in the Group 2 City of Gold Stakes and Group 1 Sheema Classic, the latter a $6 million race on the undercard of the Dubai World Cup. In England, Postponed won the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom in June and the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York in August.

Postponed races for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. A 5-year-old, Postponed was as low as 3-1 with some British bookmakers for the BC Turf on Tuesday morning.

War Story to Jockey Club Gold Cup; Protonico possible as well

War Story to Jockey Club Gold Cup; Protonico possible as well

War Story, beaten a head in the Frosted Stakes at Parx on Sept. 24, will make his next start in Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, owner Ron Paolucci said Tuesday.

Paolucci said trainer Mario Serey has been impressed with how War Story came out of the Frosted -- also known as the Pennsylvania Derby Champion Stakes -- that he told Paolucci that he wanted to run the horse right back. Paolucci recommended Saturday's Grade 2, $350,000 Kelso Handicap at Belmont. After sending the horse back to the track a few days after the Parx race, Serey told Paolucci "We'll win the Gold Cup,' " Paulucci said.

"I said "Are you out of your mind?'" Paolucci said. "Normally, it's me saying let's go to the Gold Cup and the trainer saying let's run in the Kelso."

On Monday, at Parx, War Story worked six furlongs in 1:12 out of the starting gate.

War Story, a gelding by Northern Afleet, is 3 for 14 in his career. He has placed in graded stakes four times but has run in some ambitious spots such as the 2015 Kentucky Derby, where he finished 16th of 18, and this year's Pacific Classic where he finsihed seventh of nine, 22 3-4 lengths behind California Chrome.

In the Frosted, he closed very well after getting off slowly and was only beaten a head by Cyrus Alexander, the favorite.

"That was the first time since the Louisiana Derby where people didn't call me the the biggest idiot on the planet and said that I ran him where you're supposed," Paolucci said.

When he runs in the Gold Cup, War Story will be doing so for his sixth trainer in his last six starts. The horse was sent to Serey after the Pacific Classic, but he ran in trainer Miguel Penaloza's name in the Parx race because Serey was serving a suspension.

As of Tuesday, it was unclear who would ride War Story in the Gold Cup. Javier Castellano is possible but he may ride Protonico, who could be re-routed from the Kelso to the Gold Cup. Paolucci said if Castellano doesn't ride him, he would try to get Trevor McCarthy to ride.

Todd Pletcher said Tuesday he would wait until Wednesday -- entry day -- to decide whether to run Protonico in the Gold Cup or the Kelso. Pletcher already plans to run Anchor Down and Tommy Macho in the Kelso.

The field for the Gold Cup and all seven stakes at Belmont on Saturday will be drawn Wednesday.

The expected Gold Cup field, as of Tuesday, was: Effinex (Mike Smith), Hoppertunity (John Velazquez), Mubtaahij (Irad Ortiz Jr.), War Story (TBD) and Watershed (Joel Rosario). Protonico is possible. Samraat will not be entered.
