Forever Unbridled Glides to Beldame Victory

Forever Unbridled Glides to Beldame Victory
by Evan Hammonds @BH_EHammonds
Charles Fipke’s Forever Unbridled, the 3-5 favorite, swept to the lead turning for home and won Belmont Park’s Beldame Stakes (gr. I) by 2 1/4 lengths. Tiger Ride finished second, 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Penwith in third. Off the Tracks, the 7-2 second choice, finished another three-quarters of a length back in fourth.
The time for the nine furlongs was 1:50.24 over a track listed as muddy (sealed). Joel Rosario was up for trainer Dallas Stewart. Stewart had a big day, as his Tom's Ready upended Runhappy in the Ack Ack Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs.
Forever Unbridled paid $3.80 to win, $2.60, and $2.40. Tiger Ride returned $8.40 and $5.30 and Penwith paid $4.50 to show.
Forever Unbridled was unhurried early as Paola Queen set the early pace over the wet going. She had a clear lead through an opening quarter of :24.34 and a half-mile in :49.03 as Off the Tracks gave chase in second with Tiger Ride (on the rail) and Penwith not far behind. The field bunched as they rounded the bend, as Penwith made great headway on Paola Queen, but Forever Unbridled was inhaling them all. After six furlongs in 1:14.06, Forever Unbridled was well clear after a mile in 1:38.07. Her final eighth came in a quick :12.17.
"She's not quick (out of the gate) but she broke OK," Rosario said. "I ended up being very close to the lead because they were going slow. I was just trying to take my time with her, not turn her loose and stay on the outside. I could feel she was getting over the track very good. She was taking me there nicely and I was pretty much just a passenger."
With a $400,000 purse, Forever Unbridled took home $240,000, increasing her bankroll to $1,411,600 off a record of 5-3-3 in 13 starts.
“I thought it was great,” Stewart said. “The rain just drove me nuts. If you looked at the weather the last three days, I almost had her on a van and got her out of here. They said like three inches of rain and you don't want to get into a bad racetrack going into the Breeders' Cup but they kept changing the forecast, things got better. So, thank God, we left her here. The track superintendent did a great job with how good the track looks.
“This filly…I think there’s more to come. She's tough, she really is. So long as she comes back good and everything's good (she'll run in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, gr. I)."

Successful in the nine-furlong G3 Prix Daphnis here June 22 before finishing fourth behind Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano over an extra furlong at Deauville Aug. 15, Taareef was clear-best here for a career high. Settled in fourth early, the 18-5 shot overhauled the long-time leader Hello My Love (Fr) (Literato {Fr}) with 300 metres remaining before drawing away to win by 1 3/4 lengths, with a short neck back to Moonlight Magic (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) in third. “He’s a very consistent horse and he moved well with the ground on the soft side, but he’s better on fast," trainer Jean-Claude Rouget said. “I don’t know what will happen now, but I’d like to keep him in training next year. We shall see."

Tepin Works Half-Mile at Saratoga

Tepin Works Half-Mile at Saratoga
by Blood-Horse Staff
Robert Masterson’s champion turf female Tepin, continues to march toward the Breeders’ Cup as the 5-year-old mare worked a half-mile in :49.01 Sept. 30 over the turf at Saratoga Race Course. The move was the fastest of 24 on the day’s tab at the Spa.
Trainer Mark Casse’s plan for Tepin is to ship toKeeneland Oct. 1, where the trainer will have his choice of prep races in the one-mile First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) or Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) against males. Both races are Oct. 8.
Tepin’s work comes less than two weeks after her score in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (gr. IT), her first start since taking Royal Ascot by storm in the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) in June.

Another Try for Metaboss in John Henry Turf

Another Try for Metaboss in John Henry Turf
by Jeremy Balan @BH_JBalan
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more impressive performance in a losing effort than what Metabossdid Aug. 20 in the Del Mar Handicap (gr. IIT).
Last in a 12-horse field entering the stretch and 14 1/4 lengths back at the three-eighths pole in the 1 3/8-mile race, the Street Boss colt unleashed a stunning rally on the outside only to come up a nose short against the frontrunning Ashleyluvssugar at the wire.
It wasn't just the $150,000 winner's share that stung trainer Phil D'Amato and an ownership group that includes Blue Skies Stables and MRS Stables. It also cost them a fees-paid berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), but D'Amato is content to suffer through many more stressful stretch runs from Metaboss, and he's set to take on Ashleyluvssugar again in the $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship (gr. IIT) Oct. 2 at Santa Anita Park.
"With his style, that's the nature of the beast," D'Amato said of the 4-year-old closer, who was on the Triple Crown trail for a moment in 2015 after he won the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) for trainer Jeff Bonde before shipping east, where he went winless in three troubled turf trips for Michael Dickinson. "He still has the same style. It's just, anytime you come from behind, you run the risk of traffic."
In his first start for D'Amato, Metaboss closed from 11th, as many as 10 lengths back, to win a Del Marconditional allowance on grass July 23, but it paled in comparison to his burst in the Del Mar Handicap.
LEWYN: Ashleyluvssugar Holds Tough in Del Mar 'Cap
"That last three sixteenths was one of the biggest turns of foot I've ever seen from one of my horses," said D'Amato, who indicated he's still eyeing the Breeders' Cup Turf if Metaboss runs well Sunday. "That impressed me and stamped him in my mind as a marathon horse. (Jockey) Rafael (Bejarano) got to know him when he won down at Del Mar and he couldn't believe the turn of foot he displayed in the last race there. It's made him more confident. We're not going to change his style."
Ashleyluvssugar awaits again, along with fellow multiple graded winner Flamboyant (eighth in the Del Mar Handicap) and East Coast shipper Messi, the last-out winner of the Sky Classic Stakes (Can-IIT) atWoodbine for trainer Graham Motion. Texas Ryano(third), El Huerfano (fourth), and Wanstead Gardens(fifth) also return from the Del Mar Handicap.
LAMARRA: Messi Too Good for Sky Classic Field
Reddam Racing homebred Ralis is not only the lone grade I winner in the field, but also the only 3-year-old taking on older rivals in the 1 1/4-mile turf test. The California-bred Square Eddie colt trained by Doug O'Neill won the Hopeful (gr. I) on the Saratoga Race Course dirt in 2015, but has not won in nine starts since, including his last four, all on grass. But Ralis hasn't been far off. In those four starts, he was a nose back in second twice in stakes, and last time out finished a half-length second behind Free Rose in the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT).
Multiple graded stakes-placed Twentytwentyvisionand last-out allowance winner A Red Tie Daycomplete the field.

Two Unbeaten Favorites in Florida Sire Series

Two Unbeaten Favorites in Florida Sire Series
by Blood-Horse Staff
The summer racing season at Gulfstream Park roars to a close Oct. 1 with the third and final leg of the Florida Sire Stakes. Two undefeated juveniles—Three Rules and Cajun Delta Dawn—will top the marquee in the days races.
Three Rules, a son of Gone Astray , trained by Jose Pinchin, and ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, is undefeated in four starts and has won those four races effortlessly and by a total of 21 lengths. Shade Tree Thoroughbreds' colt captured the Florida Sire Dr. Fager division by seven lengths and the Florida Sire Affirmed by 5 1/2 lengths, and has been training sharply in his quest to sweep the series' juvenile male division. He will be favored in the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 Florida Sire Stakes In Reality division.
"He's matured. He's gotten a little bit bigger," Pinchin said. "He's always been a sensible horse. He doesn't give himself any trouble."
Cajun Delta Dawn is Curtis Mikkelsen's homebred daughter of Kantharos . The 2-year-old filly, trained by David Fawkes and to be ridden by Juan Leyva, will be favored in the $500,000 Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl division, which is run at 1 1/16 miles as well. Cajun Delta Dawn is also unbeaten in four starts after winning the Florida Sire Susan's Girl in August by five lengths.
Cajun Delta Dawn's early success had taken Fawkes somewhat by surprise.
"She did surprise me, especially the second race. A maiden (win) is one thing, but when you come back and win a stake like that in her second start, that was impressive," he said.
Jacks or Better Farm's homebred Awesome Banner, by Awesome of Course, heads a cast of eight sophomores in the $150,000 Florida Sire Foolish Pleasure Stakes.
The Florida-bred colt displayed a new dimension in his most recent outing a month ago when he raced just off the pacesetters before rallying in the stretch to land the $150,000 Prized division of the Florida Sire Stakes, his second win at seven furlongs. After that effort, Awesome Banner returned to train in Ocala, where he had previously been sent for a change of scenery.
"It's a bit of a concern—his two route races were kind of ugly, but it may just be the two turns," said trainer Mark Casse. "I think that with the way he's run recently, he shouldn't have any issues with the mile. But he's gotten where he'll relax a little bit. I think he's matured."
Fred Brei's Jacks or Better also has 3-year-old Ballet Diva in the $150,000 Florida Sire Meadow Star Stakes where she'll attempt to turn the tables on R Kinsley Doll.
Ballet Diva finished an uncharacteristically dull sixth in the Florida Sire Three Ring Stakes, won by Averill Racing and Silver Oak Stable's R Kinsley Doll, a daughter of Big Drama . The Jacks or Better homebred by Hear No Evil was found to have an entrapped epiglottis, which got surgically corrected. She came back to finish second to R Kinsley Doll in the Florida Sire Jewel Princess division.
She's Incredible, the third-place finisher in the Jewel Princess, also will take on R Kinsley Doll and Ballet Diva once more. Trained by Fernando Abreu for Our Sugar Bear Stable, the High Cotton filly will break from post three and will be ridden by Jesus Rios.

Coasted to Try to Add to Turf Success

Coasted to Try to Add to Turf Success
by Frank Angst @BH_FAngst
Impressive in her two grass starts, including a clear victory in the P. G. Johnson Stakes, Coasted will try to take the step to graded stakes winner when she faces an expected six other juvenile fillies in the Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. IIIT) Oct. 2 on the Belmont Park | BloodHorse.com Track Profile">Belmont Park inner turf.
A daughter of Tizway , Treadway Racing Stable's Coasted fifnished fifth sprinting on the main track July 2 at Belmont. But moved to the turf by trainer Leah Gyarmati for her next start, Coasted responded with a six-length win in a maiden race Aug. 7 atSaratoga Race Course before returning to that course for a clear victory in the 1 1/16-mile P. G. Johnson Sept. 1.
The Miss Grillo also will be contested at 1 1/16 miles.
Awaiting Coasted Sunday are three horses making their United States debuts after starting their careers in Europe. Trainer Pia Brandt will send out Rymska, by Le Havre, a stakes winner in France, while trainer Chad Brown will saddle Dancing Waves and Create a Dream. Dancing Waves, by Zoffany, enters off an easy maiden win in Ireland while Create a Dream, byOasis Dream, will make her first start since she finished fourth, just a length back of winner Brave Anna, in the Albany Stakes (Eng-III) June 17 at Royal Ascot.
