Tepin Works Half-Mile at Saratoga

Tepin Works Half-Mile at Saratoga
by Blood-Horse Staff
Robert Masterson’s champion turf female Tepin, continues to march toward the Breeders’ Cup as the 5-year-old mare worked a half-mile in :49.01 Sept. 30 over the turf at Saratoga Race Course. The move was the fastest of 24 on the day’s tab at the Spa.
Trainer Mark Casse’s plan for Tepin is to ship toKeeneland Oct. 1, where the trainer will have his choice of prep races in the one-mile First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) or Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) against males. Both races are Oct. 8.
Tepin’s work comes less than two weeks after her score in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (gr. IT), her first start since taking Royal Ascot by storm in the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) in June.

Another Try for Metaboss in John Henry Turf

Another Try for Metaboss in John Henry Turf
by Jeremy Balan @BH_JBalan
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more impressive performance in a losing effort than what Metabossdid Aug. 20 in the Del Mar Handicap (gr. IIT).
Last in a 12-horse field entering the stretch and 14 1/4 lengths back at the three-eighths pole in the 1 3/8-mile race, the Street Boss colt unleashed a stunning rally on the outside only to come up a nose short against the frontrunning Ashleyluvssugar at the wire.
It wasn't just the $150,000 winner's share that stung trainer Phil D'Amato and an ownership group that includes Blue Skies Stables and MRS Stables. It also cost them a fees-paid berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), but D'Amato is content to suffer through many more stressful stretch runs from Metaboss, and he's set to take on Ashleyluvssugar again in the $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship (gr. IIT) Oct. 2 at Santa Anita Park.
"With his style, that's the nature of the beast," D'Amato said of the 4-year-old closer, who was on the Triple Crown trail for a moment in 2015 after he won the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) for trainer Jeff Bonde before shipping east, where he went winless in three troubled turf trips for Michael Dickinson. "He still has the same style. It's just, anytime you come from behind, you run the risk of traffic."
In his first start for D'Amato, Metaboss closed from 11th, as many as 10 lengths back, to win a Del Marconditional allowance on grass July 23, but it paled in comparison to his burst in the Del Mar Handicap.
LEWYN: Ashleyluvssugar Holds Tough in Del Mar 'Cap
"That last three sixteenths was one of the biggest turns of foot I've ever seen from one of my horses," said D'Amato, who indicated he's still eyeing the Breeders' Cup Turf if Metaboss runs well Sunday. "That impressed me and stamped him in my mind as a marathon horse. (Jockey) Rafael (Bejarano) got to know him when he won down at Del Mar and he couldn't believe the turn of foot he displayed in the last race there. It's made him more confident. We're not going to change his style."
Ashleyluvssugar awaits again, along with fellow multiple graded winner Flamboyant (eighth in the Del Mar Handicap) and East Coast shipper Messi, the last-out winner of the Sky Classic Stakes (Can-IIT) atWoodbine for trainer Graham Motion. Texas Ryano(third), El Huerfano (fourth), and Wanstead Gardens(fifth) also return from the Del Mar Handicap.
LAMARRA: Messi Too Good for Sky Classic Field
Reddam Racing homebred Ralis is not only the lone grade I winner in the field, but also the only 3-year-old taking on older rivals in the 1 1/4-mile turf test. The California-bred Square Eddie colt trained by Doug O'Neill won the Hopeful (gr. I) on the Saratoga Race Course dirt in 2015, but has not won in nine starts since, including his last four, all on grass. But Ralis hasn't been far off. In those four starts, he was a nose back in second twice in stakes, and last time out finished a half-length second behind Free Rose in the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT).
Multiple graded stakes-placed Twentytwentyvisionand last-out allowance winner A Red Tie Daycomplete the field.

Two Unbeaten Favorites in Florida Sire Series

Two Unbeaten Favorites in Florida Sire Series
by Blood-Horse Staff
The summer racing season at Gulfstream Park roars to a close Oct. 1 with the third and final leg of the Florida Sire Stakes. Two undefeated juveniles—Three Rules and Cajun Delta Dawn—will top the marquee in the days races.
Three Rules, a son of Gone Astray , trained by Jose Pinchin, and ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, is undefeated in four starts and has won those four races effortlessly and by a total of 21 lengths. Shade Tree Thoroughbreds' colt captured the Florida Sire Dr. Fager division by seven lengths and the Florida Sire Affirmed by 5 1/2 lengths, and has been training sharply in his quest to sweep the series' juvenile male division. He will be favored in the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 Florida Sire Stakes In Reality division.
"He's matured. He's gotten a little bit bigger," Pinchin said. "He's always been a sensible horse. He doesn't give himself any trouble."
Cajun Delta Dawn is Curtis Mikkelsen's homebred daughter of Kantharos . The 2-year-old filly, trained by David Fawkes and to be ridden by Juan Leyva, will be favored in the $500,000 Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl division, which is run at 1 1/16 miles as well. Cajun Delta Dawn is also unbeaten in four starts after winning the Florida Sire Susan's Girl in August by five lengths.
Cajun Delta Dawn's early success had taken Fawkes somewhat by surprise.
"She did surprise me, especially the second race. A maiden (win) is one thing, but when you come back and win a stake like that in her second start, that was impressive," he said.
Jacks or Better Farm's homebred Awesome Banner, by Awesome of Course, heads a cast of eight sophomores in the $150,000 Florida Sire Foolish Pleasure Stakes.
The Florida-bred colt displayed a new dimension in his most recent outing a month ago when he raced just off the pacesetters before rallying in the stretch to land the $150,000 Prized division of the Florida Sire Stakes, his second win at seven furlongs. After that effort, Awesome Banner returned to train in Ocala, where he had previously been sent for a change of scenery.
"It's a bit of a concern—his two route races were kind of ugly, but it may just be the two turns," said trainer Mark Casse. "I think that with the way he's run recently, he shouldn't have any issues with the mile. But he's gotten where he'll relax a little bit. I think he's matured."
Fred Brei's Jacks or Better also has 3-year-old Ballet Diva in the $150,000 Florida Sire Meadow Star Stakes where she'll attempt to turn the tables on R Kinsley Doll.
Ballet Diva finished an uncharacteristically dull sixth in the Florida Sire Three Ring Stakes, won by Averill Racing and Silver Oak Stable's R Kinsley Doll, a daughter of Big Drama . The Jacks or Better homebred by Hear No Evil was found to have an entrapped epiglottis, which got surgically corrected. She came back to finish second to R Kinsley Doll in the Florida Sire Jewel Princess division.
She's Incredible, the third-place finisher in the Jewel Princess, also will take on R Kinsley Doll and Ballet Diva once more. Trained by Fernando Abreu for Our Sugar Bear Stable, the High Cotton filly will break from post three and will be ridden by Jesus Rios.

by Frank Angst @BH_FAngst

Johnson Stakes, Coasted will try to take the step to graded stakes winner when she faces an expected six other juvenile fillies in the Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. IIIT) Oct. 2 on the Belmont Park | BloodHorse.com Track Profile">Belmont Park inner turf.

Jockey Gallardo to Try Southern California

Jockey Gallardo to Try Southern California
by Doug McCoy
Jockey Antonio Gallardo, the current national leader in victories with 287 wins in 2016, will move his tack to Southern California at the completion of thePresque Isle Downs race meeting Oct. 6.
Gallardo ranked fourth in wins at this summer'sMonmouth Park meet and leads the current Presque Isle meet with 135 wins.
"We've been thinking about this for some time, and (agent) Mike (Moran) and I agreed that if we were going to make this kind of move, this was the time to do it," Gallardo said. "Having the success we had at Monmouth this summer, and also riding and winning at Belmont (Park) convinced me we were ready to take it to the top levels in the business.
"I know the competition out west will be tough and it won't be easy to get established, but Mike has shown he's one of the top agents in the game. I'm confident he'll be able to get the business. Then it'll be up to me to prove I belong. I feel like I'm at the peak of my game right now, so while I realize it's a big challenge, I'm excited. I feel I'm ready."
Moran is traveling to Southern California Sept. 29 to find business for his rider, with a goal of having Gallardo on horses for the Oct. 8 card at Santa Anita Park.
Moran has had good feedback from horsemen regarding his rider.
"There are some very good riders on (the Southern California) circuit, but we feel Antonio is ready for the challenge to compete with them," Moran said. "In addition to topping the standings at Presque Isle, he's also been riding on the East Coast with good results. We ended up winning the most stakes at Monmouth, and (Gallardo) won 48 races and wound up fifth in the standings while commuting back and forth between Presque Isle and Monmouth. He won at Belmont last week, and he's proven he can ride and win with top competition. He's ready."
Moran said his other rider, Pablo Morales, will also be heading west. Morales has been second in the standings behind Gallardo at Presque Isle each of the past three seasons and has won at least 100 races each year since 2010.
Gallardo, a native of Spain, rode one horse in the U.S. in 2008, then began riding regularly in this country in 2009. He had limited success until 2013, when Moran took the rider's book. Gallardo won 101 races that season then rose to prominence in 2014, when he won 268 races while topping the jockey's standings at both Tampa Bay Downs and Presque Isle that year.
In 2015 Gallardo's 147 wins at Tampa for the 2014-15 meeting set a single-season record for races won at that track. His 161 victories at the Presque Isle meeting in 2015 also set a single-season mark for races won at that track. Last year Gallardo won 320 races. His mounts earned $5.44 million in purses in 2015. He ranked second in the nation in races won, second only to Javier Castellano, who had 344 wins.

Outwork, Speightster Retire to WinStar

Outwork, Speightster Retire to WinStar
by Blood-Horse Staff
WinStar Farm added two new stallions to its 2017 roster with the recent retirement of grade I winnerOutwork and grade III victor Speightster .
Outwork, a son of Uncle Mo , won the April 9 Wood Memorial (gr. I) and Speightster, by Speightstown , took the Dwyer Stakes (gr. III) in 2015.
"Outwork and Speightster are as close to Uncle Mo and Speightstown as you will find when you look at the combination of their overall quality, physical traits, and racing traits in relation to their sires," said Elliott Walden, WinStar's president and chief executive officer. "Speightstown is emerging as a sire of sires, and Speightster is closely related to Smart Strike and bred just like him. Most would expect Uncle Mo to have successful sons at stud, and Outwork looks like a carbon copy. So these are two very exciting new stallion prospects that will have the full support of some of the top breeders in the world, including WinStar and our partners Mike Repole and Woodford Thoroughbreds on Outwork. Both horses also figure to be priced in the market to be accessible for a wide range of breeders."
Outwork is the first grade I winner by Uncle Mo to retire to stud. After his Wood Memorial win, he went on to finish unplaced in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). He also became his sire's first winner as a 2-year-old when he impressively broke his maiden on debut going 4 1/2 furlongs during the 2015 Keeneland spring meet.
"Outwork has always reminded me so much of Uncle Mo," said trainer Todd Pletcher. "Both are big colts with similar qualities, including their uncanny speed and precociousness for their size. Both were always very forward in the mornings and among the best work horses in the barn, and obviously they both went on to do great things stretching out their speed to win major grade I races."
Bred and owned by Repole Stable, Outwork earned $701,800 racing. He is out of the grade I-placedEmpire Maker mare Nonna Mia, a half sister to multiple grade II winner Cairo Prince .
Speightster scored a seven-length debut win at Keeneland, and backed it up with a 3 1/2-length victory over grade II winner Joking in his next start in a Belmont allowance.
In his third start, Speightster remained undefeated at his third different distance and third different class level when he captured the one-mile Dwyer by 2 1/2 lengths over 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Texas Red. Speightster only made one start in 2016, when he finished eighth in the Churchill Downs Stakes (gr. II) May 7.
"Speightster was an extremely fast and talented horse," said trainer Bill Mott. "He really reminded me a lot of another colt I had from that sire line, Elusive Quality. Both had brilliant speed and a rare ability to carry it over a mile."
A WinStar homebred, Speightster hails from the Danzig mare Dance Swiftly, a full sister to championDance Smartly and half sister to champion sire Smart Strike.
Stud fees for Outwork and Speightster will be announced at a later date.

By the end of the 13-day Keeneland September yearling sale it would be Gainesway's Tapit by a nose over Claiborne Farm's War Front .
Tapit, currently the leading North American sire with more than $15.8 million in earnings and 14 graded stakes winners, was represented by 31 Keeneland yearlings averaging $639,839. Among those sold, four brought more than $1 million and 19 brought $500,000 or more. Tapit's top seller was a half brother to multiple grade I winner Mucho Macho Man . Bridlewood Farm and M.V. Magnier teamed up to buy the colt for $2 million.
War Front had 19 yearlings sell for an average of $633,947. Two of his progeny sold for more than $1 million and 14 sold for $500,000 or more. Indy) and $1.3 million for a colt out of multiple grade I winner Love and Pride (A.P. Indy).

The other top-seller is a filly out of English group winner and group stakes producer Dietrich (Storm Cat), which sold to bloodstock agents Jason Litt and Alex Solis II.
Speightstown had 26 of 40 offered bring an average of $329,115, which is a 44% increase over his 2015 Keeneland September average of $228,379 for 29 sold. The son of Gone West had five yearlings sell for $500,000 or more compared with two that sold in this range at last year's September sale.
Among this year's freshman sires, Ashford Stud'sUncle Mo was the runaway leader just as he is on the leading freshman sire list with nearly $10.5 million in progeny earnings to second-place Twirling Candy's nearly $2.6 million. The son of Indian Charlie had 40 of 48 offered sell for an average of $219,875.
The leader among first-crop yearling sires by average ended up being Ashford's Declaration of War , a son of War Front who stood his first season in Ireland and then was relocated to the U.S. for the 2015 breeding season after shuttling to Australia.
