Price Returns for Canadiens

Carey Price will make his first start of 2016-17 with the Montreal Canadiens when they play the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday, head coach Mark Therrien announced.

Price, 29, missed the first three games of the season with the flu and reportedly lost between seven and eight pounds with the illness. Price has not started a game with the Canadiens since Nov. 25 when he suffered an MCL sprain that caused him to miss the remainder of 2015-16 season. At the time of his injury, Price had a record of 10-2-0 with a 2.06 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. The Canadiens had started the season by winning nine straight games but ended with a 38-38-6 record and missed the playoffs.

Price was the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and helped his country to the title before suffering the flu before the start of the 2016-17 season.

Al Montoya has been between the pipes for the Canadiens in Price’s absence this season and has posted a 2-0-1 record with a 1.30 goals against average and a .962 save percentage.

Bruins’ Bergeron to Make Debut

The Boston Bruins will welcome Patrice Bergeron back to the lineup when the team hosts the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, Bruins head coach Claude Julien announced.

Patrice Bergeron, NHL, Boston Bruins, Fantasy Hockey, Fantasy

Patrice Bergeron (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

Bergeron’s return is a major addition for the Bruins — a team that has scored 11 goals in the season’s first three games and posted a 2-1-0 record. After a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets to open the season, the Bruins lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 in a game where the team felt the impact of being without Bergeron. The Bruins bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

The team has been lead by forwards Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak who have paced the Bruins in scoring with seven and six points, respectively. Marchand scored five of those points in the team’s season opener.

Bergeron, 31, has spent his entire 12-year career with the Bruins and has been a franchise player for the club since he the Bruins picked him 45th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In 2016-17, Bergeron skated in 80 regular season games and registered 32 goals and 36 assists. Bergeron’s previous career-high for goals was 31 back in 2005-06.

Bergeron helped Team Canada to the World Cup title this offseason.

Blues’ Schwartz Set to Return Against Oilers

Jaden Schwartz will make his season debut against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, the team announced.

Jaden Schwartz (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

Jaden Schwartz (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

Schwartz, 24, is returning from an elbow injury he suffered at a practice on Sept. 29. The injury was expected to keep him out of the lineup for at least four weeks, but on Wednesday head coach Ken Hitchcock said Schwartz was getting close to close to making an early return.

The Blues won three straight games to open the season, but 2-1 to the Vancouver Canucks in overtime on Tuesday. The team is currently in first place in the Central Division with seven points.

The team has been lead by forwards Paul Statsny, Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Steen who are the team’s top three scorers through four games. Statsny and Tarasenko are tied for the team lead with six points and Tarasenko leads the Blues with four goals. Steen has a goal and four assists on the season.

Schwartz will add to the team’s offensive productivity as they look to carry on the success they have had to start 2016-17. Schwartz registered 22 points in 33 regular season games in 2015-16 and missed 49 games with a fractured ankle.

Schwartz averaged nearly 78 games played and 27 goals in each of the previous two seasons.

Letang Out Against Sharks

The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without defenseman Kris Letang when they face the San Jose Sharks in a rematch of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final on Thursday.

Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL, Hockey, Fantasy Hockey

Kris Letang (Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports)

Letang is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, according to Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan. Letang was injured after a hit by the Montreal Canadians’ Brendan Gallagher during a game between the clubs on Tuesday.

Letang, 29, has skated in four games this season and has averaged 26:09 in ice time. He has scored two assists and is a minus-two. Both of his points have been scored on the power play — a unit that benefits greatly from his speed leaving the Penguins’ defensive zone.

The Penguins are also without Sidney Crosby who is recovering from a concussion. Forward Conor Sheary is day-to-day and will not play on Thursday. Sheary, 24, has tallied a goal and two assists in four games.

Odds and Ends

— The Coyotes will start start goaltender Louis Domingue against the Canadiens, the team announced on Thursday. Mike Smith will return to Arizona to undergo a consultation with team doctors for what is currently being called a lower-body injury.

Puck Lists: Ranking every starter based on their name's spoonerism

Puck Lists: Ranking every starter based on their name's spoonerism

Spoonerisms have seen an odd uptick in popularity in recent years, mainly on Twitter.

The idea is basically that if someone tweets something with which you disagree, you just say their name back to them with the letters reversed. If I make a dumb tweet (impossible), you reply, “Lyan Rambert," to show that you are not taking what I say seriously. It’s dumb itself, but it’s effective.

And once you start doing it, it is very difficult to stop. Tronald Dump and Clillary Hinton are both very strong. And college football’s Dark Mantonio is even stronger. Kave Dingman? Also up there. Or NFL washout/possible burnout Gosh Jordon. People love spoonerisms, is what I am saying to you.

Meanwhile, I have always been fascinated with hockey players whose names are almost always said in full. How do we determine whose name falls into that category? There’s no set rule behind it, but almost no one ever just says “Toews." They say “Jonathan Toews." (And by the way, Tonathan Joews is a great spoonerism.) First and last. Almost every time. This is a trait particularly prevalent among goaltenders. You almost never hear Matt Murray referred to as “Murray," but rather as, “Matt Murray."

[Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Hockey contest now]

So with this in mind, let’s rank every team’s starting goaltender — injuries notwithstanding — based on their name’s spoonerism. It’s too early to really evaluate hockey anyway!

30 (tie). Ben Bishop – He may be one of the better goalies in the NHL, but he’s also one of three whose names are alliterative and therefore not good in this regard. Good for them, though, because

    30 (tie). Matt Murray

    30 (tie). Devan Dubnyk

    27. Aederik Frandersen – Aedrik is a Westerosi name if I’ve ever seen one. Probably from the Reach if we’re being honest. And given that he’s on the same team as a guy named Joffrey, that feels pretty appropriate.

    26. Lari Kehtonen – Lari is actually a diminutive name for Lars in Scandinavian languages. Like if you were particularly close with your ol’ buddy Lars down at the bar you’d say, “Hi Lari, how are the wife and kids?" And he would tell you they’re fine but he’s not having the best time right now because he just gave up three goals on 25 shots again. “Lari that’s the second time this week!" you would say.

    25. Eian Brelliott – This would have been higher on the list because “Brelliott" is good, but Eian doesn’t carry enough water here.

    24. Metr Prazek

    23. Bergei Sobrovsky

    22. Vemyon Sarlamov – Vemyon definitely sounds like a poison-type Pokemon. That’s definitely a thing.

    21. Haroslav Jalak – Haroslav is, I’m pretty sure, just the Slovak version of “Harold." Actually I’m pretty sure that’s what “Jaroslav" is but y’know. Or maybe Jaroslav is like Gerald? It could also have no real English equivalent. I’m not super familiar with Slavic language taxonomy. Sorry.

    20. Honnor Cellebuyck – When I was a kid there was a farm stand near my house and when the owner wasn’t there he wouldn’t shut down, but he would put up a big sign out front instead. It said, “THE HONER SYSTEM." No one corrected him on it for years and years. Just one of those things I guess, because the tomatoes were always real good. Anyway, Honnor would have been his second pass at it.

    19. Crorey Cawford – This one might not seem like it should have gotten this high, but Crorey is fun to say, as is Cawford. Put ’em together and you’re headed in the right direction.

    18. Aake Jallen – I guess this is pronounced like “Ache?" Not strong. Jallen is, though. Something about those J sounds.

    17. Lenrik Hundqvist – Lenrik Hundqvist is a tax attorney in Helsinki.

    16. Smike Mith – Who’s that goalie? “’Smike." Oh okay.

    15. Lobin Rehner

    14. Tam Calbot

    13. Loberto Ruongo – I think if anyone would approve of this list, it would be Roberto Luongo. He gets it.

    12. Ruukka Task

    11. Hayden Broltby – Hayden Broltby is something you’d put in your frat-boy gross-out humor comedy screenplay until you think of a better name for the big dumb jock.

    10. Aaig Cranderson – “Egg."

    9. Macob Jarkstrom – Again, it’s those J sounds. Jarkstrom also sounds like a lost Ruutu brother.

NEWARK, NJ – OCTOBER 18: Cory Schneider #35 of the New Jersey Devils takes a first period water break during the game against the Anaheim Ducks at the Prudential Center on October 18, 2016 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

    8. Schnory Ceider – I gotta tell you: Schnory is really excellent here. Very strong. If only Ceider were a little better, Schneider would place higher in these rankings, as befits a goaltender of his caliber.

    7. Prarey Cice – This is also true of Carey Price. The new last name really undercuts a high-quality first name.

    6. Wam Card – This one only works if you pronounce it “Wham cord" but I really like it. If you pronounce it “Wham card" that’s when you drop the “Wild Plus 4" in Uno.

    5. Meve Stason – Why is Meve so funny? It really shouldn’t be. (“It’s not," says the average Y! commenter. I see your point and I don’t care.)

    4. Rekka Pinne – The obvious joke here is that this is what a really hungry guy says he will do to a plate of pasta. Clearly I am not above obvious jokes, so there ya go.

    3. Gohn Jibson

    2. Jartin Mones – This is awesome. Long live J sounds in spoonerisms.

    1. Quonathan Jick – With the exception of former batterymate Martin Jones, no one else was even close to The Best Goalie In the World. J sounds are great, but Q sounds bring it to a whole other level. Utter domination from California’s goalies.

LA Kingsa Jonathan Quick avoids surgery, out 3 months

In the end, goaltender Jonathan Quick decided against undergoing surgery for a groin injury suffered last week in the Kings' season-opening game and instead had a different, non-invasive procedure done Tuesday, the team said Wednesday. The next question facing the Kings is whether to continue to go with Jeff Zatkoff and/or Peter Budaj in goal or to pursue a trade for another goalie.

Rookie Patrik Laine scores hat trick as Jets come back to edge Maple Leafs in OT

Rookie Patrik Laine scored a hat trick, including the winner at 2:40 of overtime, as the Winnipeg Jets overcame a four-goal deficit on Wednesday to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4. Laine scored the winner right after Leafs rookie Auston Matthews was stopped by Winnipeg goaltender Michael Hutchinson at the other end of the ice.

Trending Up, Trending Down: Laine sizzles, Russell hot takes fizzle

    by Josh Gold-Smith 8h ago
    Bruce Fedyck / Reuters

Each week, theScore looks at the teams, players, and other hockey figures trending upward and taking a step back.

    ▲ Patrik Laine

    Laine 1, Matthews 0.

The first round of the manufactured "rivalry" between No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews and second selection Patrik Laine went to the latter, and while it was only one game, the Winnipeg Jets prospect made an emphatic statement Wednesday night.

Laine scored the tying goal with under a minute remaining, then the overtime winner to cap off a hat trick and stun the Toronto Maple Leafs, who coughed up a four-goal lead.

The 18-year-old showed he's just as deserving of the spotlight as his counterpart and served notice to both his team and the rest of the league that he's ready to lead by example.

    ▼ Kris Russell apologists

When Kris Russell recorded three assists in his first four games with the Edmonton Oilers, you just knew he'd be praised despite going unsigned for nearly the entire summer.

The Edmonton Journal's Jason Gregor authored a column Tuesday arguing that Russell's solid start proves analytics don't tell the whole story, but no one who understands the relationship between numbers and sports believes analytics are the only way we should study the game.

What the numbers do is help confirm or disprove hunches made without quantitative evidence, like the hot take Sportsnet's Roger Millions was skewered for when he touted the defenseman's intangibles one day later.

Okay. Getting blasted. Here is the real meaning. Kris Russell's effort and desire is huge. Greater than most. Relax.

    — Roger Millions (@RogMillions) October 19, 2016

It's a bad look to form any conclusion after four games, let alone one that can't be proven.

▲ Joe Thornton and Brent Burns

Can these guys endear themselves any more to hockey fans?

The San Jose Sharks duo is trending again after being spotted roaming the streets of Pittsburgh on an off-day Wednesday before facing the Penguins.

Thornton appears to have no problem forgoing his shirt in the late October air, and as Burns notes, his teammate didn't avoid the gym in the offseason.

@colin_dunlap tiny creepy and shouldn't be on phone while driving BUT I respect the photo skills! 19looks like he just got off the bench! Ha

    — Brent Burns (@Burnzie88) October 19, 2016

The two colorful characters fell short in their quest for the Stanley Cup in June, but they've once again won our hearts.

    ▼ The shootout

The NHL's de facto skills competition is an easy target, and it was thrust back into the conversation Tuesday night in Florida.

Vincent Trocheck's controversial shootout goal - which was initially called off - was reviewed and ultimately allowed to stand despite the on-ice officials' ruling that he lost control of the puck during the attempt.

It was a sequence that didn't end up mattering (the Tampa Bay Lightning eventually prevailed), but it led many to once again question the shootout as a reliable method for deciding games.

It's not likely the NHL will scrap it any time soon, but that won't stop people from pointing out its flaws every time their gripes are validated.

Squad Up Daily NHL Fantasy Dose: Get your Anaheim Ducks in a row against the Flyers

James Guillory / USA TODAY Sports

Follow theScore's fantasy feed on Twitter (@theScoreFantasy) for the latest news, features and more. And download Squad Up, theScore's free-to-win-money sports game.

Here is a look at the Squad Up daily NHL fantasy picture for Thursday, October 20:

    Line Stacks

    • LW Nick Ritchie (27K), C Ryan Getzlaf (66K), RW Corey Perry (64K), Ducks (at Flyers): The Ducks may not have a lot of scoring depth, but their top line pairing of Getzlaf and Perry is as reliable a combo as there is. Ritchie could benefit by virtue of playing alongside them and his reduced price makes rostering the trio possible.
    • C Tyler Johnson (47K), RW Nikita Kucherov (49K), Victor Hedman (43K), Lightning (vs. Avalanche): The Lightning have paired Kucherov and Johnson for some time, but the two have been split on the power play this season. If the Lightning score with the man advantage, one of them is on the board. They're affordable pieces who can easily convert at even strength, as well.
    • LW Max Pacioretty (68K), C Alex Galchenyuk (46K), Brendan Gallagher (66K), Canadiens (vs. Coyotes): Anticipate Coyotes G Louis Domingue to play with Mike Smith sidelined. The Canadiens haven't had trouble scoring through three games, and while the top line is a little pricey, rostering an inexpensive defenseman like Rasmus Ristolainen allows for all three, plus a top goaltender.

    Goalie Breakdown

    • John Gibson (77K), Ducks (at Flyers): Gibson has been shaky through three starts, but he's shown improvement with each game. The Flyers featured a mediocre scoring attack in 2015-16 and very little has changed other than the addition of W Dale Weise. The top line might give Gibson trouble, but beyond that this looks like the best chance at the Ducks' first win.
    • Robin Lehner (75K), Sabres (at Canucks): The Canucks are undefeated but have only scored eight goals in three games. Despite winning all three, at no point were the Canucks actually playing with the lead. They had to rally and win in overtime or a shootout each time. Lehner has been good and bad. Expect the former.
    • Cam Talbot (84K), Oilers (vs. Blues): Talbot would be a fine contrarian option if his Squad Up salary didn't prohibit it. It's much too high against the Blues. The Oilers have given Talbot plenty of scoring to support him through four games, but this is the toughest test yet. Save Talbot for easier action despite being at home.
    • Roberto Luongo (80K), Panthers (vs. Capitals): A little cheaper than Talbot, Luongo has a more impressive resume and can be rostered as a tournament contrarian against the potent Capitals offense. Luongo has won both of his starts so far and should be rested after sitting out Tuesday's game against the Lightning.

    Bargain Plays

    • D T.J. Brodie (25K), Flames (vs. Hurricanes): Brodie is second on the Flames with 24 1/2 minutes of ice time per game. While the scoring hasn't followed suit, he has historically showcased playmaking skills worth exploiting. He gets time on the power play and the Hurricanes still have G Cam Ward in net. He doesn't need much to return value.
    • LW Milan Michalek (25K), Maple Leafs (at Wild): With all the focus on the young guns like Ws Auston Matthews and William Nylander, Michalek makes for an affordable alternative. He may not be the 60-point scorer he was in 2011-12, but he will run into the odd goal on Toronto's second line. If he starts getting time on the power play, this salary is far too low.
    • RW Sebastian Aho (29K), Hurricanes (at Flames): Possibly lost amidst the higher profile rookies, Aho has notched a pair of assists in his first three games, though he's yet to find twine. Both helpers have come on the power play, so Carolina is entrusting him to be effective. Against the Flames who can't stop the bleeding, Aho is in a great position for his first multi-point night.

    Top Fades

    • C Jonathan Marchessault (50K),Panthers (vs. Capitals): Marchessault has found good fortune, tallying four points in three games. Playing alongside RW Jaromir Jagr and C Aleksander Barkov will certainly boost his opportunities. He's doubtful to keep this pace, and he's facing last season's Vezina Trophy winner, G Braden Holtby.
    • LW Daniel Sedin (68K), Canucks (vs. Sabres): It's not a reflection of his skills, though the older he gets the less reliable he should be, but Sedin being the highest priced LW in Squad Up should be enough to force you to look elsewhere. He'll need a multi-point night, and that's unlikely if Sabres G Robin Lehner plays to his potential.
    • C Auston Matthews (67K), Maple Leafs (at Wild): The immediate output was never going to live up to the four-goal debut as Matthews has only a single assist in his following two outings. It will be a season of ups and downs, and playing on the road against the solid Wild defense and G Devan Dubnyk doesn't tilt the scales to his advantage.

    Contrarian Options

    • RW Vladimir Tarasenko (95K), Blues (at Oilers): That salary is lofty enough to scare people away because it forces scrimping at almost every other position. It's hard to argue with his production, though. Tarasenko has scored four goals and added two assists in four games. He's always a threat to score multiple times per game.
    • C Jason Spezza (58K), Stars (vs. Kings): With one goal and a minus-3 through three games, Spezza has been slow out of the gate and will be overshadowed by other options in Dallas' offense. Skating with an offensively deficient Antoine Roussel hasn't helped. Spezza was a surprise with 63 points last season and could break out against Kings G Jeff Zatkoff.
    • LW Max Domi (40K), Coyotes (at Canadiens): With G Carey Price potentially returning, and Al Montoya coming off a shutout win, Domi has an uphill battle ahead of him. Take a relatively inexpensive Domi despite the difficult matchup because of possible lingering effects from Price's flu. If the Coyotes play him alongside Anthony Duclair and Dylan Strome a bit more, it's even better.

Canadiens' Price set to make season debut

    by Craig Hagerman 8h ago
    Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

    The wait is over.

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will make his season debut Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes as he returns after a lengthy battle with the flu, head coach Michel Therrien announced.

Price missed the club's first three games of the season after a flu bug left him quarantined in his own home and caused him to lose between seven and eight pounds.

The former Vezina Trophy winner returned to practice on Wednesday where Therrien admitted he couldn't wait to have Price back in the net.

Al Montoya took on the starting roll in Price's absence and fared admirably posting a 2-0-1 record with a 1.3 goals-against average, a .962 save percentage, and one shutout.

Price's start will mark his first with the Canadiens since Nov. 25 of last year after he suffered a devastating MCL sprain that caused him to miss the rest of the season.
